Whirligig Weekend

Last weekend was Shelburne's 14th Annual Whirligig Festival.

The festival is held in Shelburne's historic district of overlooking the harbour.  The setting is beautiful!  It was a gorgeous day - blue skies, puffy white clouds and just the right amount of wind to set the whirligigs a-spinning.  The entries are always so creative.

This one makes me think of bath time at home when my boys were little!  Did you notice the husband?

Skunk!

There are always a couple of naughty ones. This is one of my favourites: the duck is using the topless girl as a decoy while he hides behind the reeds ready to shoot the hunter

Hope to see you there next year.

Fall is in the Air

It is September 22nd already!  Hasn't the summer flown by quickly.

Today marks the last day of Summer and the first day of Fall.  Fall officially starts at 4:44 EDT today.  That's 3:44 in Nova Scotia.   In 23 minutes time.

To mark the start of Fall, I spent the day working in the garden.  This year we grew a really good crop of weeds in our vegetable garden.   It was sad to see the beautiful raised beds we had so eagerly built in 2011 overgrown with grasses and clover.  So ... today I spent a few hours weeding, turning the soil and generally getting the garden ready for a fall planting of garlic bulbs.

We are trying three different varieties.  One I bought from a lady in Pubnico on Saturday at the Mile Long Yard Sale; another from Uncle Sids and the third from another local gardener.

Don't they look nice all planted in a row.

Now all we have to do is  w a i t.
